Marden Park lies in a valley approximately a mile long at the foot of the North Downs in Surrey, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the village of Woldingham. It is now a school, with nothing of the original garden remaining. Only its 18th-century road layout and the part of the 18th-century walled kitchen garden remain.

In this talk, Sandra will chart the creation and development of the Marden Park estate in Surrey from its purchase in 1672 until the 1790s when the Clayton family seat moved to Marlow. It will examine the likely layout of the original garden, the 18th-century improvement undertaken by Nathaniel Richmond, and her latest new research on the Thomas Mawson garden, created in the early years of the 20th century.

Sandra Pullen had a career in learning and development before taking up garden history. She has been involved with the Gardens Trust series of online lectures since 2020. She sits on the Gardens Trust Education and Training Committee. She is also a committee member of the Birkbeck Garen History Group. And a member of the research and recording committee of the Surrey Garden Trust and regularly lectures on aspects of garden history and the local history of Twickenham. Sandra is a qualified teacher and trainer and completed an MA in Landscape and garden history from the Institute of Historical Research in 2021. She is currently researching into the influence of immigration on London’s gardens and open spaces.
